Winchester is set on the grounds of its famous medieval Cathedral and, around Christmas, the town is filled with festive things to do, says Country and Townhouse.
The city served as England’s capital around 901 AD, but in 1066 it was replaced by London.
Its Christmas Market attracts tourists every year – it is set against the old-fashioned town, which makes the market even more charming.
The city is one of the UK’s oldest and as you’re walking around, you’ll be able to see its impressive old buildings and historic streets.
While you’re there, the cathedral is a must-see. Its incredible interior decor is admired by both tourists and locals alike.
One visitor took to Tripadvisor to say: “The visit to this cathedral was the highlight of the day made all the better by having a guided tour. I booked tickets in advance through their website, saving £1 each – this ticket is valid for return visits for a year from date of purchase.
“When we arrived a guide was available pointing out many things we would have missed had we just walked round on our own.”
Another person on Tripadvisor said its Christmas market is “the best so far”.
The market is open now. Its opening hours will be from 10am to 6pm Monday to Wednesday, 10am to 7pm on Thursday, 10am to 8pm Friday to Saturday and 10am to 5pm on Sunday.
In colder weather, you can take refuge indoors at one of the many cafes the city has to offer – this will allow you to enjoy a relaxing break from exploring the city.
