When preparing for short or long-distance flights, there’s an important reason why you should think twice before placing plug adaptors in your checked luggage. In a TikTok post, The Points Guy — whose tagline is “spend smarter, travel better” — disclosed the items you should “never put in your checked bag”, including a plug adaptor.
He clarified that this everyday essential is better suited to your carry-on bag as checked luggage faces the risk of going missing. Beyond that, if you’re travelling long distances, there’s also the chance that finding an appropriate plug adaptor could prove difficult — even within the airport. Another everyday essential (if you’re heading somewhere warm) is sun cream, which is similarly best stored in hand luggage.
Further items you may wish to keep in hand luggage include a spare change of clothes, toiletries, spectacles, and medication.
The travel expert said: “You may be able to get a doctor to call in your prescription, but that becomes trickier if it’s a weekend or a holiday or if your medication doesn’t allow for refills before the previous prescription runs out.”
Any precious items, such as jewellery, cash, and objects of sentimental value, are also best stored in hand luggage, if space permits.
This is because there’s a risk of luggage being lost, stolen, or accidentally taken by someone else on the baggage carousel.
In response to the travel warning, people flocked to the comment section on the TikTok video. One user penned: “Everything important goes into my carry-on. Meds, contacts, electronics in particular.”
Another individual remarked: “I only have clothing and shoes in checked bags. Everything else is in my carry-on.” A third added: “Scary that this has to be explained to people.”
