Spring is well and truly here, and with temperatures hopefully rising across much of the UK, now is the ideal time to plan a day trip or weekend getaway. There are countless beautiful destinations right on our doorstep, and you don’t always need to board a plane to discover your new favourite place.

Venice is a hugely popular holiday destination for good reason, but overcrowding makes it far from perfect if you’re seeking a peaceful break. If it’s tranquil waterfront strolls, stunning architecture and rich history you’re after, one British village has it all, and much more. Nestled on Chichester Harbour, the parish of Bosham is often called the ‘Venice of England’ for its picturesque waterfront, magnificent buildings and fascinating heritage.

Just two hours from London, this little-known village offers everything you could possibly want from a relaxing weekend escape.

Despite being small, with a population of around 4,300 residents, there is a lot to explore, along with a quaint charm that is truly one of a kind.

The parish sits directly on the harbour, making it an absolute must-visit for those who love being by the water. There are plenty of spectacular walks to enjoy nearby, including across the quay or further afield into Chichester.

It’s equally great for sailing enthusiasts and wildlife lovers, as the harbour serves as a sanctuary for migrating wildfowl, shelduck, Brent geese, waders and many more species.

Bosham boasts a fascinating history as well. It served as a significant village during Roman times, and is still home to numerous important artefacts from that period, with the Fishbourne Palace situated close by.

It is also believed to be both the birthplace and final resting place of Harold II, the last Saxon king.

Today, visitors can still discover many of its historical landmarks, such as the Holy Trinity church. It stands as the oldest known place of worship in West Sussex, and enjoys a superb location near the South Downs country park, allowing you to venture outdoors and appreciate nature after admiring the stunning architecture.

For those who enjoy shopping, Bosham Walk is worth visiting – an independent arts and crafts centre situated right in the village centre featuring more than 100 vendors offering their distinctive goods.

From ceramics and woodcraft to jewellery and textiles, one could easily spend hours browsing here, rounding off the experience with a coffee and cake from Wendy’s Cafe.

Alternatively, if you fancy something slightly stronger, a trip to the Anchor Bleu is essential. This historic pub, found on the high street, originally opened as an inn in 1741, but is now a family-run pub and restaurant boasting a spacious beer garden and a traditional chalkboard menu that varies daily. Admirers of the pub have posted glowing reviews on TripAdvisor, with one writing: “Outstanding pub located in the heart of Bosham, great ales on tap and outstanding food and service with a smile – special mention for pie night and the roasts.
