PlayStation users will need to verify their age in order to continue using communication features on PS4 and PS5, Sony has announced. If you’re a PlayStation user and you want to chat with friends and teammates when playing online, then you may want to check your emails. In order to comply with global regulations, Sony requires a one-time age check from all PlayStation users. According to an email sent by Sony, age verification will need to be completed in order to “avoid interruptions later in 2026”.
While age verification is required in order to use features such as messages and voice chat, it’s not needed for accessing your games library, unlocking Trophies and using the PlayStation Store.
Sony explains more: “At Sony Interactive Entertainment, we are committed to creating safe, age-appropriate experiences for players and families while respecting privacy and giving players and parents meaningful control over their gaming experience.
“As part of our compliance with global regulations, you’ll need to verify your age later this year to continue using PlayStation communication features, such as messages and voice chat.
“You will still be able to access other PlayStation services, like games, trophies, and the Store, if you do not verify your age.”
According to Sony there are multiple ways to verify your age, but it all starts with checking your email and following the instructions.
“You can verify your age by selecting a method that suits you in the age verification flow,” Sony continues.
“You have several options for verification, including mobile number, facial scan, or ID. Verification methods are provided by our service provider Yoti.”
It’s worth noting that under 18s will need to use an account managed by a parent or guardian in order to use the communication features.
If you are under 18 and have an adult account, then the account will need to be updated to the “appropriate account type”. A parent or guardian will be required to manage this process.
