The New York Mets have brought back Richard Lovelady to add a lefty reliever to the roster.

On Thursday, a semi-notable trade took place between the New York Mets and Washington Nationals, in a rare inter-division move.

Multiple reports suggest the Mets and Nats agree on a trade sending Richard Lovelady to Washington for cash. Lovelady, 30, was recently designated for assignment by the Mets over the weekend.

MLB World Reacts to Mets-Nationals Trade

Richard Lovelady has been in MLB for seven seasons. In 2026, he pitched just 7.1 innings and surrendered three earned runs and four walks. Lovelady had previously been a part of the Nationals organization during spring training, but the Mets claimed him on waivers shortly after he was released by Washington.

As the trade continues to break across the MLB news landscape, here are some reactions from social media:

@ReutersSports: The Washington Nationals re-acquired left-handed reliever Richard Lovelady from the New York Mets on Thursday in exchange for cash considerations.
@JoeNajarian:The #Mets have parted ways with Richard “Dicky” Lovelady. Again. This time, he was traded to a division rival.
@SparkerooMI:Plenty of topics for Sunday’s opening monologue, but I have to think you’ll lead with the Mets trade of Richard Lovelady to the Nats for cash considerations.
@mets_therapy: July 3, that’s the over/under on the next time the Mets claim Richard Lovelady back.
@BWakai: Richard Lovelady was with the #Nationals during spring training before he was DFA’d. Now, after being acquired for cash, he’s back with the team as they search for a bullpen unit that can be effective.

What Does Richard Lovelady Trade Mean for the Mets?

Richard Lovelady has emerged as a ‘DFA carousel’ player. There’s no telling where he ends up from here.

Perhaps the Nationals use him in a bullpen role, perhaps not.

Over 118+ innings in his career, Richard Lovelady holds a 5.25 ERA over 124 appearances out of the bullpen.

He’s played with the Mets, Kansas City Royals, Tampa Bay Rays, Athletics, Chicago Cubs, and Toronto Blue Jays.

Lovelady has seen his most MLB time with the Royals (parts of three seasons). With the Mets over 17.1 innings, he’s given up 10 earned runs.
