Toronto Raptors Star Named Most Overrated Player in NBA This Season

Brandon Ingram is having a solid season for the Toronto Raptors. He’s leading the team in scoring, and he was named an All-Star for the second time in his career earlier in the campaign.

But, is Ingram actually overrated? Bleacher Report’s Andy Bailey certainly seems to think so, as he awarded Ingram the top spot on his list of the 10 most overrated players in the NBA this season.

Bailey pointed to empty counting stats and the fact that the Raptors are statistically better when Ingram is off of the floor to back up his claim.

“This is a dubious honor that Brandon Ingram is under no obligation to worry about, but his All-Star nod and the general perception of 20-point-per-game scorers contributed to him being this season’s most overrated player,” Bailey wrote.

“Impact metrics suggest Ingram played nowhere near All-Star level this season. He was well below the league’s averages for both effective field-goal percentage and true shooting percentage. And the Toronto Raptors were way better when he was off the floor. … The team is likely headed to the playoffs. And Ingram being its leading scorer is not nothin’. But Toronto’s success has a lot more to do with Scottie Barnes, Immanuel Quickley and Sandro Mamukelashvili than Ingram’s reputation suggests.”

Brandon Ingram Named Most Overrated Player in NBA This Season

A list of the most overrated players in any given season is subjective. Raptors fans might not agree in this specific situation, but Bailey is entitled to his opinion.

The other players included in Bailey’s list of most overrated players are Norman Powell, Paolo Banchero, Dillon Brooks, Domantas Sabonis, Draymond Green, Jonathan Kuminga, Ja Morant, Kyle Kuzma and Jaylen Brown.

Based on the other names in the list, it’s clear that it’s comprised of talented, well-paid players who failed to live up to their potential this season. Is it fair for Ingram to lead that list? That’s debatable.

Ingram Is Fresh Off of His Best Performance of the Season for Toronto

The timing of Ingram’s inclusion on the overrated list is a bit ironic, as the star forward is fresh off of his most productive game of the season for Toronto. He tallied 38 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists in the Raptors’ 128-114 win over the Miami Heat on Thursday night.

“It’s a good time to be in rhythm,” Ingram said after the game.

With the win, the Raptors moved one step closer to clinching a spot in the playoffs and avoiding the Play-In Tournament in the Eastern Conference. They now need just one more win, or a Philadelphia 76ers loss, to secure a spot.

Toronto has two regular season games remaining on their schedule. Those two games will come against the Knicks in New York on Friday and the Brooklyn Nets in Toronto on Sunday.

The Raptors haven’t won a playoff series since 2020. If Ingram can help Toronto break that streak this season and advance to the conference semifinals, Bailey might have to rethink Ingram’s status as the league’s most overrated player this season.
