Golden State Warriors guard De’Anthony Melton broke his silence on his future as free agency approaches, offering insight as his value continues to rise late in the season.
Coming off a career-best stretch, Melton acknowledged his appreciation for the organization while making it clear he is taking a measured approach to what comes next.
“The future is only what the future can hold,” Melton said on 95.7 The Game. “I try to take it day by day at this point, because you never know what could happen, and you never know what tomorrow holds, especially given my career and what’s happened.”
Melton added that while his appreciation for the organization is clear, he is not looking too far ahead.
“I feel like I’ve expressed countless times how much I love Golden State — from the medical staff to the front office to the players,” he said. “But at the end of the day, I just take it day by day to see how it goes.”
Melton Trending Up at the Right Time
Melton’s comments came after a standout showing in Golden State’s 125-117 win over the Washington Wizards on Monday.
The 27-year-old guard poured in 27 points on 12-of-17 shooting, adding five rebounds, four assists and two steals in 30 minutes. It marked a career high in made field goals and continued a strong stretch in which he has scored at least 20 points in three of his last four games.
What made the performance more notable was how he did it.
Despite averaging nearly three made three-pointers in his previous 20-point outings this season, Melton scored all 27 points without converting a shot from beyond the arc — instead relying on drives, cuts and mid-range efficiency to carry the offense.
It was another sign of his growing versatility.
After missing Sunday’s loss to the New York Knicks due to left knee injury management, Melton returned with renewed energy, stepping into a larger offensive role as the Warriors continue to manage the workload of Stephen Curry.
A Strong Fit Alongside Stephen Curry
Melton’s recent surge has only reinforced his value within Steve Kerr’s system.
His ability to defend at the point of attack, create secondary offense and play both on and off the ball has made him a natural complement to Curry. In stretches where Curry has been sidelined or limited, Melton has taken on additional responsibilities without disrupting the team’s flow.
That versatility has not gone unnoticed.
According to The San Francisco Standard’s Tim Kawakami, Melton’s impact has been significant even in limited availability.
“If he was playing more, Melton might be co-MVP of these stretch games,” Kawakami wrote. “If he’s good and available the rest of the way, he might be the Warriors’ secondary MVP of the season.”
Kawakami also noted that Melton currently leads the team in plus-minus at +195, a reflection of his two-way effectiveness.
Rising Value Creates Offseason Questions for Warriors
Melton’s performance is arriving at a pivotal moment.
After signing a team-friendly deal, the guard is widely expected to decline his $3.5 million player option and enter free agency. His production — combined with his age and skill set — could push his next contract into the $15–$20 million per year range, according to NBC Sports Bay Area’s Monte Poole.
That puts the Warriors in a familiar position.
Golden State previously lost Donte DiVincenzo after a breakout season when his market value exceeded what the team could comfortably offer. Melton’s trajectory is beginning to mirror that path, creating another potential cap dilemma for the front office led by Mike Dunleavy Jr.
Health remains one variable.
Melton has dealt with injuries in recent seasons and is still being managed carefully, including limitations on back-to-back appearances. That could influence his market value, though his recent performances are strengthening his case as a high-level rotation guard.
Warriors Facing Another Tough Decision
For Golden State, the equation is becoming increasingly clear.
Melton fits. He produces. And he complements Curry in ways that are difficult to replace.
But as his value rises, so does the cost of keeping him.
With the regular season winding down and the Warriors still battling for playoff positioning, the immediate focus remains on winning games. Yet Melton’s recent play — and his candid remarks about his future — serve as a reminder that a significant offseason decision may be approaching.
For now, Melton is staying present.
The Warriors, however, may soon have to look ahead.
