The New York Yankees are hoping to see young shortstop Anthony Volpe take a big step forward during the upcoming 2026 MLB season.

When he entered the big leagues, Volpe was expected to be a star for the Yankees. He has shown flashes of that potential, although there have also been quite a few disappointments early on in his professional career.

Ahead of his fourth full season at the Major League level, Volpe has been recovering from a shoulder injury. He is expected to miss a chunk of the early part of the year. However, he should be back in time to make sure that New York doesn’t try to replace him before the trade deadline.

With that being said, the Yankees have provided a new update about where Volpe stands in his injury recovery.

New York Yankees Give New Anthony Volpe Update

As shared by MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch, Brian Cashman spoke out with information about Volpe’s recovery.

“Anthony Volpe is ‘working his tail off’ at the Tampa complex as he rehabs from surgery, Brian Cashman said,” Hoch shared on X. “The Yankees have previously said they don’t expect Volpe back until after April.”

Missing Volpe until after April will be a tough blow for New York. Despite him missing action, the Yankees still have belief that he can continue developing to reach his full potential.

Last season, the 24-year-old shortstop played in 153 games. He hit 19 home runs to go along with 72 RBI and a slash line of .212/.272/.391 and also swiped 18 bases. Defensively, he struggled at times, committing 19 errors throughout the year.

There are a lot of areas Volpe must improve to become the player New York expected him to be. The hype has been high around him and this season will be a make-or-break year.

The Yankees Have Had a Lukewarm Offseason Thus Far

At this point in the offseason, the Yankees are a team who has had a decent but not great offseason.

Cashman was able to hammer out a new long-term five-year, $162.5 million contract with star outfielder Cody Bellinger. Keeping him in New York was the clear top priority for the Yankees. However, the team has not made any other splash moves.

There were rumors about New York potentially trading for star pitcher Freddy Peralta, but the Milwaukee Brewers ended up trading him to the New York Mets. Other rumors have been swirling, but the Yankees have not been very aggressive yet.

It’s possible that New York could still take some big swings. There are quality players remaining on the free agency market and the trade market could also bring in more talent.

Fans can only wait patiently to see if Cashman has anything up his sleeve as the offseason winds down. Should the Yankees decide to stand pat and head into the season with their current roster in place, there will be a lot of questions that need to be answered early in the year.
