A castle perched on a tiny island where three lochs meet has earned a reputation as one of the world’s most beautiful. Its stone towers and dramatic bridge have appeared in countless photos – and even a James Bond film. Fans of 007 may recognise it from The World Is Not Enough (1999), where it doubled as a secret Scottish headquarters for MI6. The same castle was used in the British-American action fantasy film Highlander (1986), which co-stars Sean Connery.
The castle in question is Eilean Donan, on a tiny tidal island where Loch Duich, Loch Long, and Loch Alsh meet in the western Highlands. Located near the village of Dornie along the A87, it’s roughly a 2.5-hour drive from Inverness or a short hop from Kyle of Lochalsh station.
The fort dates back to the 13th century, though much of what stands today was rebuilt in the 20th century. The castle interior includes displays on clan history and medieval artefacts, and there’s also a stunning view from the stone bridge framing the castle against Loch Duich and Loch Alsh. Sunrise and sunset in particular offer dramatic photo opportunities.

“You can explore almost every room inside the castle. Most of the castle is open for touring, so you can see a LOT. Inside Eilean Donan Castle, you’ll find the Banquetting Hall, drawing room, recreated kitchen, scullery, pantry, servants hall, bedrooms, parlour, lavatories, inner courtyard, main keep, and more. The Banquetting Hall is worth the cost of admission alone, it’s absolutely breathtaking.”

Best time to visit: Summer for the light, autumn for dramatic colours and fewer tourists.
