It’s been seven years since Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker concluded the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Since then, the sci-fi franchise has found success on the small screen with the debut of Disney+. Alongside the critically acclaimed Andor, The Mandalorian TV series has proved incredibly popular. Pedro Pascal stars in the titular role as a bounty hunter who adopts Baby Yoda aka Grogu.
After three seasons of television set after the events of Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, the story continues on the big screen this week in The Mandalorian and Grogu. Don’t worry if you’ve not seen the TV show, as it’s very much a one-off big screen adventure, much like the serialised Western style of the series’ episodes.
Set after season 3, The Mandalorian and Grogu (written and directed by Jon Favreau) sees the pair recruited by Sigourney Weaver’s Colonel Ward of the New Republic. Their mission is to rescue Jeremy Allen White’s Rotta the Hutt in exchange for information on a new target. Rotta is the muscular son of the late Jabba the Hutt and has become a gladiator who doesn’t share his gangster father’s ruthlessness.
Just like the fantastic TV series, The Mandalorian and Grogu is a planet-spanning, fun-filled action-adventure. There’s plenty of guns and muppets to enjoy, but did this really need to be on the big screen? Not necessarily, but it’s still solid Star Wars if that’s your thing – and if you’ve got boys aged 5-12, they of all people will get the most out of it thanks to the plethora of alien beasties.
